Ili Eve - The man who laughs

Here are some illustrations I did for one of my favorite books - "L'Homme qui rit" by Victor Hugo. The novel is written in the spirit of romanticism and it was released in 1869.
I tried to keep the style of the drawings in line with the book, although you can see my fascination with the Japanese art. An interesting fact about the novel is that the main character Gwynplaine is a prototype of the Joker from Batman.
In order not to repeat this popular image, I decided to leave his looks not fully revealed, what showed to the viewer was just his smile.
